Accelerate to 2014: Summer 2010
In June of 2010, MaST Academy and the SABE MAS Academy partnered with Canutillo Independent School District to offer 8th grade graduating students a free summer math & science enrichment program.
This program was designed by MaST and SABE MAS Scholars to:
- Orient new 9th graders to their new high school;
- Accelerate learning 9th grade math and science TEKS;
- Make real world connections to math and science;
- Learn about college pathways and careers in math and science.
MaST Scholars designed a program with lessons which integrated math and science and field trips about:
- Go Green, with activities to learn about solar energy and recycling:
- DaVinci Days, with a trip to the DaVinci exhibit and learning about his inventions;
- Physics of Amusement Park Rides, with a trip to Western Playland and creation of roller coasters;
- Desert Ecology, with a trip to Hueco Tanks and a speaker who brought venomous/nonpoisonous animals of the area;
- Skin and Sports, with learning about the effects of the sun on the skin and culminating with a tour of UTEP, introduction to college life, several science demonstrations, and a swimming party!
Thank you to ADP and Canutillo ISD as well as our many sponsors, hosts, and presenters. A special thank you to Canutillo AVID student volunteers. Each Canutillo student was given a Flip video camera & t-shirt through the grants. We also want to thank our Canutillo Mentor Teachers, Heather Cawley and Dani Pena!
